CALIFORNIA POLITICS
Census 2020
California’s population growth is slower than expected, which may result in the state losing a congressional seat, likely in the Los Angeles area, which is currently represented by Latinx and Asian American members: Judy Chu, Grace Napolitano, Linda Sanchez and Lucille Roybal-Allard.
Los Angeles
CDT partner Power California (the union of Mobilize The Immigrant Vote and YVote) helped lead a successful fight to lower the voting age to 16 in Los Angeles Unified School District school board elections. We have supported Power California’s nonpartisan and political work for many years, including this year.
UNIONS, POST-JANUS
Politico takes an in-depth look at the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Janus ruling one year ago, including the continued efforts of major conservative, anti-union forces to dismantle unions and attack workers’ rights.
POLICY
Assemblymember Shirley Weber’s bill restricting police use of deadly force, AB 392, is moving forward, but with amendments made to remove police opposition. “The bill, substantially restructured, retains the ‘necessary’ language — though its definition has been removed. Also removed is language explicitly requiring officers to exhaust nonlethal alternatives before resorting to deadly force.” Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon are now co-sponsoring the amended bill, and Governor Newsom has signaled his support. This bill is another example of how we need more progressive — not just Democratic — champions in the state legislature to enact stronger criminal justice reform.
